Luckily, the looting, exploration and combat loop is very entertaining, but I do wish the storyline was either better written or less pronounced than it actually is. The storyline (which was pretty subdued in the first game) is not very good unfortunately, and by the end of the game it really feels as if it's totally fallen apart. Ranged weapons (drones) are also more viable this time around, which was cool to see. I was pretty impressed by the variety in combat styles and played around with a bunch of different weapons. The devs have also revamped how the various upgrades work, and there's a BUNCH of different weapon types and armor to play around with. Another difference compared to the original is that there are a lot of outside areas this time around, providing more variation than the endless dark corridors of the first game. I like how the new parry system is not forced on you, but can be advantageous in many situations. The combat has been slightly changed from the first game and now lets you parry almost all attacks if you're good at timing and direction. This lets you obtain their armor and weapons, which is pretty neat. Like in the first game, you can target and cut off enemies' limbs. It's a soulslike game set in a kind of trashy European-made sci-fi universe with extra gore. The original game was one of those releases that I just played on a whim and ended up loving. Nice - this pretty much gave me what I wanted out of a sequel to The Surge.
